In the late 19th century, transportation developments, economic opportunities, and federal incentives stimulated significant demographic changes as the population shifted westward.

Rich strikes of gold and silver in the West catalyzed rapid migrations of prospectors and other settlers. Boomtowns, including Nevada’s Virginia City and Colorado’s Denver, seemed to appear overnight.

The economic opportunities of the West also drew international migrants, especially from China in the late 19th century. Ethnic neighborhoods, like Chinatown in San Francisco and Seattle, became home to tens of thousands of Chinese immigrants.

The growth of boomtowns and ethnic neighborhoods fueled the development of other industries such as laundries, banking, and entertainment as new centers of commercial activity opened new markets.
The growth of settlements, including boomtowns and ethnic neighborhoods, in the West resulted in significant demographic change which also displaced Mexican American and American Indian residents.
