Today I will be explaining the main characteristics of the Southern Colonies.
Southern Colonies Journal of the American Revolution
The Southern Colonies included the present-day states of North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. This region experiences hot summers and mild winters with rich soil and a long growing season.

Due to these conditions, the Southern Colonies developed plantation economies based on the growth and export of crops including tobacco, rice, and indigo.

Despite some early restrictions, colonial demand for cheap labor intensified and there was significant growth in the number of enslaved Africans trafficked to the region who primarily labored on plantations.

By 1790, enslaved Africans constituted a majority of the population in several areas of the Southern colonies. While the labor and conditions were typically harsher than in other colonial regions, the high percentage of Africans did allow for more cultural and religious autonomy.
The Southern Colonies should be most remembered for their plantation economy based on the export of crops and for having the highest percentage of enslaved Africans.
