First Battle of Bull Run, Wikimedia Commons
With the formation of the Confederacy and the first shots at Fort Sumter, the Civil War began. However, it was the First Battle of Bull Run that demonstrated the intensity of the war ahead.
Battle of Antietam, Wikimedia Commons
In September of 1862, Confederate General Lee led an attack at Antietam in hopes of encouraging European alliances. While it ended in a draw, Lee’s did not achieve any alliances which showed the failure of “cotton diplomacy.”
Siege of Vicksburg, Wikimedia Commons
From May to July 1863, the Union laid siege to Vicksburg, Mississippi in hopes of securing the Mississippi River. After 7 weeks, Confederates surrendered, effectively splitting the Confederacy in two.
Battle of Gettysburg, Wikimedia Commons
The Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863 was both the bloodiest battle of the Civil War and the turning point for the Union. After a failed attack, Lee’s army retreated and never regained the offensive.
With several key victories by the Union, the South was unable to muster European alliances and the North achieved a strategic goal of controlling the Mississippi. These turned the tide of war to the Union.
