Hey APUSHers, let’s chat about the Election of 1876 and the Compromise of 1877 as part of my series- APUSH in 1 Minute Daily!

As a result of the corrupt presidency of Grant and the poor economic conditions since the Panic of 1873, the Democratic party had gained support which led to intense circumstances in the Election of 1876.

Republicans nominated war hero Rutherford B. Hayes who supported Radical Reconstruction. Democrats supported Samuel J. Tilden who had gained popularity when he prosecuted Boss Tweed of Tammany Hall for corruption.

There was no clear winner at the end of election day as the votes in Florida, South Carolina, and Louisiana were contested and so both sides claimed victory.

Some historians contend that an informal compromise was made. In exchange for Republican Hayes becoming president, Reconstruction would end and the military would be removed from the South.

The contested election of 1876 led to the Compromise of 1877. With increased Southern resistance to Republican Reconstruction policies and Northern waning resolve, Reconstruction ended.
