In the Election of 1864, Lincoln’s reelection was far from certain. Northerners were frustrated for many reasons including the length of the war, the minimal impact of the Emancipation Proclamation, and the wartime constraints on civil liberties.

With doubts about his chances for victory, Lincoln chose “War Democrat” Andrew Johnson from Tennessee as his running mate. Through this selection, Lincoln tried to send a message of unity as the end of the war drew nearer.

Several factions divided the Northern Democratic Party. However, the party adopted a peace platform to end the war as quickly as possible. They nominated George McClellan, the former general of the Union Army, despite his disagreement with the party’s platform.

Lincoln’s popularity with Union soldiers, division within the Democratic party, and the expected conclusion of the war, contributed to Lincoln’s landslide victory.
Abraham Lincoln won reelection in 1864 overcoming the Democratic campaign promises to make peace with the Confederacy.
