After the ratification of the Constitution in 1788, the process of selecting a president commenced. States were required to choose electors who would each cast two ballots.
1789 Election Results, 270 to Win
Of the 72 electors, all but three cast ballots. North Carolina, Rhode Island, and New York did not participate in the electoral process. There was no public participation in this first presidential election.

George Washington was essentially unanimously elected as he appeared on 69 ballots. John Adams received the second highest number of votes which gave him the position of Vice President.

Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789 in New York City. He immediately faced the task of establishing the various departments of the government. Additionally, he would need to quickly address many international and domestic challenges.
In the election of 1789, George Washington was unanimously chosen by electors from each state. His presidency marked the beginning of a new system of governance under the Constitution.
