The Spanish-American War of 1898 lasted only a few months and was thus called “a splendid little war.” However, it had profound and far-reaching effects on the US and the territories involved.

The Treaty of Paris that concluded the conflict resulted in Spain ceding its territories of Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines to the United States, marking the emergence of the U.S. as a colonial power.

The annexation of the Philippines led to a brutal insurgency against American rule, resulting in a protracted conflict that lasted until 1902 and was particularly controversial.

Regarding Cuba, the Platt Amendment, implemented in 1901, granted the United States the authority to intervene in Cuban affairs, oversee its finances, and establish military bases which was bitterly resented by many Cubans.

The Spanish-American War of 1898 marked a clear departure from isolationist foreign policy to a more interventionist stance as the U.S. acquired overseas territories and sought to expand its influence in the Pacific.
