In the early 20th century, the conservation movement in the United States emerged as a response to the rapid industrialization and exploitation of natural resources.

Roosevelt and Muir, National Park Service

Led by figures like President Teddy Roosevelt and John Muir, the movement aimed to address environmental degradation, promote sustainable resource management, and preserve the nation's natural beauty.

Several legislative initiatives were enacted including the creation of the United States Forest Service in 1905, the Antiquities Act of 1906, and the establishment of the National Conservation Commission in 1908. These contributed to the protection of public lands and resources.

Additionally, the establishment of the National Park Service improved management of national parks and the passage of the Newlands Reclamation Act facilitated water management and irrigation projects in the arid West.

The conservation movement marked a shift in environmental consciousness, influencing policies and practices that sought to balance economic development with the responsible stewardship of natural resources.
