In the 19th century, dozens of tribal groups occupied the West and faced massive encroachments on their lands as Americans and international immigrants flooded to the region stimulating conflict.

Shortly after the Civil War, the Sioux War began. It was a series of battles, sieges, and raids in which the Lakota proved to be a formidable opponent for the U.S. Army. It resulted in smaller reservations for the Sioux tribes.

The Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890 marked the end of the Indian Wars against the U.S. As the Lakota tribe engaged in the Ghost Dance to restore abundance to the tribe, around 300 people were killed by the U.S. Army.

The Indian Wars cost the U.S. treasury more than $750 million as they launched military campaigns to protect their land and culture.
After decades of resistance, major conflicts with American Indians ended and western tribes were forced onto smaller reservations and faced assimilationist policies.
