The Cold War era saw the formation of significant alliances and blocs as nations aligned themselves with either the United States and capitalism or the Soviet Union and communism. 

Satellite States, School History

After World War II, the Soviet Union exerted control over Eastern Europe through the establishment of satellite nations, which were communist regimes installed in countries to act as a buffer zone against Western influence.

Original NATO members, We Are NATO

As a result, several Western democracies established a military alliance called the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) for the purpose of collective defense against the perceived threat of Soviet aggression. 

Warsaw Pact, Britannica

In response, the Soviet Union formed the Warsaw Pact, a military alliance consisting of Eastern European communist states, serving as a counterbalance to NATO. 

These alliances and power dynamics shaped the geopolitical landscape of the Cold War era, intensifying global tensions and contributing to proxy wars around the world.
